To clean and protect an engine, the oil must continue to perform until it is removed when the car is serviced. With some OEMs recommending longer service intervals, an oil’s ability to stay fit is even more important. Lubricants break down in two main ways: physically by being mechanically sheared, and chemically by being oxidised. And throughout the oil’s life, it has to disperse more and more dirt – keeping it locked away and preventing it from being redeposited in the engine.

Modern engines operate at high temperatures and have long service intervals. In the hot, stressful engine environment, fast-moving parts can tear large molecules to pieces. This action, which is known as shearing, can cause the oil to get thinner and leave it less able to properly protect the engine components. If oils shear, they lose viscosity, and this can expose an engine to more friction and wear.
